Press Release

Mr. Sofiane Chaib, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, presided today—via videoconference—over an interactive meeting with members of the national community residing in Australia. The meeting was attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Canberra and took place within the framework of regular communication with the various segments of the national community abroad, in implementation of directives from the country's highest authorities aimed at strengthening the State's ties with its citizens overseas and listening to their concerns and aspirations.
On this occasion, the Secretary of State highlighted the unique nature of the national community's presence in Australia, considering the geographical distance and the region's historical ties to Algeria's national memory—specifically through the descendants of Algerians exiled to New Caledonia during the colonial era, some of whom subsequently moved to Australia due to its geographical proximity. He also acknowledged the community's wealth of students, skilled professionals, and entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of valuing this human capital, enhancing its contribution to national development, and recognizing its role in strengthening relations between Algeria and Australia.
Furthermore, the Secretary of State reaffirmed the commitment to ongoing efforts aimed at bringing services closer to community members, bolstering their protection and connection to the homeland, and creating favorable conditions for their participation and contribution to the national development process. The meeting served as a forum for dialogue and interaction with members of the diaspora, offering an opportunity to listen to their concerns and priorities and to benefit from their views and suggestions. The Secretary of State urged them to maintain constant communication with the Algerian Embassy in Canberra and to rally around it, emphasizing a commitment to utilizing the outcomes of this meeting—alongside insights gained from other consultative sessions with the diaspora—to develop programs and initiatives that meet the aspirations of the community's various segments and address their diverse needs and specific circumstances.
