On Monday, September 28, in Madrid, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lounes Magramane, co-chaired the Algerian-Spanish political consultations alongside his Spanish counterpart, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Mr. Diego Martínez Belío.

The session provided an opportunity to review the state of Algerian-Spanish relations across various sectors. These relations have received a significant boost, aligning with the positive momentum recently observed in bilateral ties—a trend exemplified by the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Algeria on July 20, 2026, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the resulting important decisions aimed at diversifying cooperation between the two nations. The review also took into account the meeting held between Mr. Ahmed Attaf—Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs—and his Spanish counterpart, Mr. José Manuel Albares, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed ongoing preparations for the 8th session of the Algerian-Spanish High-Level Meeting, scheduled to take place in Madrid in the coming weeks. Both parties emphasized that this significant bilateral event would serve as an opportunity to assess various aspects of cooperation and to chart new, promising horizons for the bilateral partnership across diverse fields. Draft bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding currently under review—scheduled for signature during the proceedings of this mechanism—were also presented.

Regarding the economic aspect, both parties expressed satisfaction with the level of trade between the two countries, which has seen a significant surge recently. They emphasized the importance of encouraging productive investment in Algeria, highlighting the country's vast potential and promising opportunities, as well as the incentives offered to foreign companies under the new investment law. The two sides also discussed cooperation between Algeria and the European Union, along with ways to revitalize this partnership.

Furthermore, the parties exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interest, against the backdrop of current developments in the Middle East and their repercussions on international peace, security, and the global economy. Discussions also covered the latest developments regarding the Palestinian cause and the Western Sahara issue, the situation in the Sahel-Saharan region and Libya, and the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.

At the conclusion of the consultations, both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks and looked forward to continuing joint efforts and intensifying coordination, thereby opening broader horizons for bilateral cooperation.
